About Roscoe, NY
"Trout Town, USA"
Legend has it that Irving Berlin wrote “I’m
Dreaming of a White Christmas” in his streamside farmhouse near the
Beaverkill. Legend also has it that a trout swam up stream to Roscoe
and reached the pool at the junction of the Beaverkill and the
Willowemoc –not able to decide which stream to take, he grew
two-heads. The tale of the two-headed trout was told for years and
years at anglers reunions held in the Antrim Lodge or Keeners Pool
as the famous Tap room was known. This community is steeped in
legend and fishing folklore. Nestled in the southwestern foothills
of the Catskill Mountains with a population way under 1000, a one
block long business district that features three fishing shops, it
has garnered quite a reputation in the fishing world. Winning the
designation “The Ultimate Fishing Town” in 2011 was only the most
recent honor. Long known as “Trout Town, USA”, a name bestowed upon
the community by the Theodore Gordon Fly Fishermen, this town on the
banks of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc Creeks has been considered
the birthplace of Dry Fly Fishing in the United States.
The location is perfect, mountains, dense forests, crystal clear
mountain streams just two hours from the New York City metropolitan
area. The birth of the railroad made the trip easy, the automobile
made it even easier and famous trout clubs sprang up along long
stretches of riffles and pools… The Quill Gordon Club, the Brooklyn
Fly-fishers Club, the Beaverkill Fly Fishers Club, the Debruce club,
Clear Lake club. Many are still in existence today along with the
Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, a world class facility
dedicated to preserving and cultivating the history and the future
of the sport beautifully situated on the banks of the Willowemoc.
The oldest fly shop in NY is still open, in a simple wood frame farm
house within walking distance to the river. Run by the 3th
generation of the famous Dette Family, they still take the rivers
temperature everyday during the season and let you know (if you call
in) how the fishing is and what the fish are biting.
Presidents have fished here, most recently Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter
in the 1980s, the rich and famous, the regular Joe’s, grandparents
and kids…it runs the gamut. You can buy a fancy rod for thousands of
dollars in town or a starter set for 10 bucks. You can sleep in a
high end Inn for hundreds of dollars a night with a piece of river
to call your own or pitch a tent in a campground along the river.
It’s a place for everyone…everyone who loves fishing that is. The
fishery and its anglers have quality and diversity.
