Fishing

Named " TROUT TOWN USA" and "FLY FISHING CAPITAL OF THE EAST" by the American Federation of Fly Fisherman, Roscoe is at the confluence of the BEAVERKILL and WILLOWEMOC CREEK.  Opening Day of trout season at the famous JUNCTION POOL is a regularly featured event on national TV, in fishing videos, and in many prominent sporting magazines.

World Class Fishing

When it comes to Trout Fishing, Roscoe New York is the Top Destination in the East. Our town is located in the Southwestern section of the Catskill Mountains in an area that is blessed with rugged mountains, pristine rivers, lakes and ponds. These waters are deep in history. This is where Fly Fishing luminaries such as Theodore Gordon, Rube Cross and AE Hendrickson gave American Dry Fly fishing its birth.

Today “Trout Town USA” is a haven for visiting Fly Fishermen. With five of America’s top Trout Streams right in our back yard its no wonder that our small town is home to 4 Fly Shops and that some of the regions top Fly Fishing Guides and Fly Tyers call Roscoe home.

Visiting Anglers will find world class Trout Fishing at their doorstep. Just west of down town is where the Famous Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers meet. It is here that you will find the Famous Junction Pool, home of the legendary “Two Headed Trout”. This is also the starting point of a parade of legendary pools such as Hendrickson’s, Cairn’s and Wagon Track’s. These are classic Dry Fly Pools that have been challenging anglers for hundreds of years.

Just a short ride west of town will reveal the other Jewels of the region.  It is here that anglers will find The East, West and Main Stem of the Delaware River. These are large tailwater rivers that provide world class Trout fishing throughout the summer months. Together with the Beaverkill and Willowemoc these rivers combine to offer visiting Trout Fishermen almost endless opportunity to wet a line from April through October.

For the still water angler the mountains around Roscoe are yours to explore. Not far from town is the Pepacton Reservoir. The deep cold water of Pepacton regularly yields Brown Trout in the 10 - 15 pound range. This reservoir is also known for superb Smallmouth Bass fishing. In addition to Pepacton our mountains are dotted with lakes and ponds that are too numerous to list, all teeming with fish.

Come Cast a line in our waters, you’ll be hooked for a lifetime!

Fishing Report

2009 should be a time of plenty for visiting fishermen. Steady rainfall throughout the month of June has all of our local rivers in exceptional condition for the time of year. Currently all of our area rivers are in the perfect temperature range for both Insects and Trout to be active.

Currently the Beaverkill and Willowemoc are fishing well under medium to high water conditions. Fly fishermen will find success at this time with a variety of flies and techniques. With the higher water, Streamers, Wets, Nymphs and Dry Flies will all produce during the course of a day.

Dry Fly anglers will find Sulfurs, Isonychia, Cahills, Blue Wing Olives, Caddis and Stoneflies on the water. Currently the periods of peak activity are early in the morning and the last few hours before dark. During the mid day period’s anglers should also be able to tempt our Trout with terrestrial insects such as Ants, Beetles and Caterpillars. The mid day period is also the best time to explore the riffle water with nymphs and wet flies.

Visiting anglers will also find our nearby tailwater rivers, the East and West Branches to be in great condition at this time. Both are ice cold with steady bottom releases of cold=2 0water! Both the East and West are currently having daily hatches of both Sulfurs and Blue Wing Olives. The activity is currently best from mid afternoon until dark. On cloudy overcast days insect hatches can occur at any time.

Our Reservoir fishing is getting good. Most anglers are reporting good success on Pepacton both for Trout and Smallmouth Bass. Trout fishermen have been having luck both trolling and with live bait. Recently most of the fish have been in the medium size range with a lot of fish around 3 to 6 pounds.

For more info on the fishing opportunities in our area please contact the Fly and Tackle shops listed above
