BALD EAGLE OBSERVATION

The Bald Eagle has experienced an amazing comeback from the brink of extinction over the last several years, with the number of eagles observed continually growing.  Residents of Roscoe and its outskirts frequently view the birds throughout the area.  Some sites to visit for information on this glorious species include www.dec.ny.gov/animals/9378.html; www.eagleinstitute.org; www.dvrconline.org

COUNTY FAIRS

County fairs are a long-standing American tradition, giving folks the opportunity to display their vegetables, livestock, and pets to win the coveted blue ribbon.  Competitions abound from equestrian performance, to who can tow the heaviest piece of equipment.  Augment this with amusement park type rides, country entertainment, and great fair food and you have a great day for the whole family.  Roscoe is lucky enough to be positioned between two county fairs and within a short drive of each.  For information on the Sullivan County Little World’s Fair, visit www.grahamsvillefair.com.  For information on the Delaware County Fair in Walton, visit www.delawarecountyfair.org

COVERED BRIDGES

Covered bridges evoke an unforgettable memory of life in the country.  These structures were originally built to prevent cattle from being afraid to enter, as they looked like barns, and to protect the bridge structure from the weather.  For an interesting history and complete tour information of covered bridges in our area, visit www.coveredbridgesite.com, and search under Sullivan and Delaware Counties.

FISH HATCHERIES

Adults and kids alike enjoy viewing where fish are raised for release into the local brooks, rivers, lakes, and ponds.  For information contact the Catskill New York State Fish Hatchery at 845 439-4328, which is located at 402 Mongaup Road, Livingston Manor, 12758.

HISTORIC FIRE TOWERS

An intriguing part of Catskill History is the fire towers that observers once used to search for dangerous fires --- there are many excellent books available on this topic.  While these towers are no longer used for that purpose, the Department of Environmental Conservation and others have joined together to create a restoration project with the intent of reopening them for visitors.  For information on this interesting topic, visit www.catskillcenter.org/towers

------------------------------------------

ROSCOE’S RIVERSIDE PARK

This park, developed and opened by the community on July 4th, 2009, provides fishing access, walking paths, a nature area, and several picnic areas along the famous Willowemoc Creek.  The park is conveniently located in Roscoe’s downtown area.
