The history of the Two Headed Trout Dinner

Postcard of the Antrim Lodge

Historic postcard of the Antrim Lodge. RiverReporter.com, December 20th, 2017, Fritz Mayer

Since the 1940s, New York fly-fisherfolk have gathered in Roscoe, NY—Trout Town, USA—for a dinner party on the first weekend of April to mark the opening of fly-fishing season. Started by the former New York Timesman Red Smith, the original group of diners included fly-fishing pioneer Lee Wulff and A. J. McClane, who is perhaps the greatest American angling author of all time. Originally held at the currently closed Antrim Lodge (awaiting renovations work), the dinner has moved to the nearby Rockland House where it is held today.

New York Times, “Outdoors; Tale of a Two-Headed Trout, Fly-Fishing and Baseball”, April 2, 1995, Peter Kaminsky.

The legend of the two headed trout

Legend has it that a migrating trout—who came to be called Beamoc—arrived at Junction Pool, where the Beaverkill River and the Willowemoc Creek come together. Upon arriving at the pool and looking up at both beautiful waterways, he couldn’t decide which one to live in. Beamoc kept looking left and right, and left and right. So much so that he grew two heads as he settled into Junction Pool sitting facing both idyllic waterways without having to choose one over the other.
